Let number of residents who speak both = x
Then:
Only Italian = 10 &minus; x
Only Mandarin = 13 &ndash; x
So,
(10 &minus; x) + (13 &minus; x) + x = 20
x = 3
Thus, number of residents who speak only one language =
(10 &minus; 3) + (13 &minus; 3) = 7 + 10 = 17​

Hence, option d is correct.
