Civil Services Examination (CSE)

The Civil Services Exam (CSE) is India's most prestigious government examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to recruit top administrative officers like IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS and many other central government roles.

This exam selects future leaders responsible for policy-making, governance, development, security, and national administration.

About UPSC CSE

UPSC CSE is known for its tough selection process and high dignity. It tests a candidate’s knowledge, analytical ability, leadership skills, ethics, and decision-making ability.

The exam is conducted in three stages:

  • Prelims — Objective-type screening test

  • Mains — Descriptive written examination

  • Interview / Personality Test — Final personality assessment

The exam attracts lakhs of aspirants every year, with only a small percentage making it to India’s most powerful services.

Eligibility

  • Education: Bachelor's degree from a recognized university

  • Age Limit: 21 to 32 years (General category)

    • OBC: +3 years relaxation

    • SC/ST: +5 years relaxation

    • PwBD: +10 years relaxation

  • Number of Attempts:

    • General: 6

    • OBC: 9

    • SC/ST: Unlimited attempts (within age limit)

  • Nationality:

    • For IAS & IPS: Must be an Indian citizen
