What Happened Next?
Within just eight hours, the ministry withdrew the order through a corrigendum, restoring physiotherapists’ right to use ‘Dr’ before their names. The issue was then placed under further review and examination.
Why Did the Issue Arise?
The controversy emerged after the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professionals (NCAHP) introduced a new competency-based curriculum in March 2025. This framework allowed physiotherapists to use the prefix ‘Dr’ along with the suffix ‘PT’. However, this move clashed with medical associations’ objections and earlier court rulings.
What Is the Position of the Medical Fraternity?
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) strongly opposes the decision. Its National President, Dr Dilip Bhanushali, described the reversal as a “cruel joke” and signaled the possibility of moving the matter to court.
Medical practitioners argue that using the prefix ‘Dr’ creates ambiguity and may mislead patients into assuming physiotherapists are qualified medical doctors.
What Does the Law Say?
The Indian Medical Degrees Act, 1916, restricts the use of medical titles to individuals holding recognized medical qualifications.
Additionally, courts in Tamil Nadu and Kerala have previously ruled that physiotherapists cannot use the prefix ‘Dr’.
What Is the Official Stand Now?
According to Dr Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services, the September 9 directive is officially treated as withdrawn. She emphasized that the matter requires further deliberation. Dr Sharma also suggested that physiotherapy graduates and postgraduates may adopt a specific title that avoids confusion among patients.
