Cloning technology and human eggs
What Is Cloning Technology?
Cloning technology involves making a copy of cells or organisms by using their DNA. It is usually done by transferring DNA into another cell that can grow and divide.
What Did Scientists Do in This Study?
They took DNA from a person’s skin cell and placed it inside a donor egg after removing the egg’s own DNA. This egg then behaved like a natural egg, ready for fertilisation.
Why Is This Important?
Many women cannot have children because they do not produce healthy eggs. This method could let them have babies that are genetically related to them.
Who Can Benefit?
- Women with infertility problems due to age or illness.
- Same-sex couples, since DNA from both partners can be combined.
- People without healthy eggs or sperm.
Is This Treatment Available Now?
No. Scientists stress that this is only a “proof of concept”. It may take at least 10 more years of testing before it becomes safe for use in fertility clinics.
What Do Doctors Say?
Experts believe this could change how we treat infertility and miscarriages, offering hope to people with no other options.
